After premiering as part of the Midnighters series at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, the supernatural thriller “Plus One” has just been picked up by IFC Midnight. The film was directed by Dennis Iliadis (“The Last House on the Left”) and stars Rhys Wakefield (“The Purge”) and Logan Miller (“The Bling Ring”). Yet the most intriguing aspect of the VFX heavy film isn’t who was behind the camera, at least in the accepted usage of the phrase. It’s who’s literally behind the camera, aka director of photography Mihai Malmaire Jr., whose last film was none other than Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master.”
“Plus One” (or “+1”) tells the story of three college friends who go to a massive party unlike any other house party ever. We’ll keep the twist a secret, but let’s just say “supernatural thriller” doesn’t quite sum it up. If the otherworldly aspects don’t peak viewer interest, surely the allure of seeing imagery akin to those beautiful waves in “The Master” will draw a few film fans to check “+1.”
“Dennis Iliadis has created a sexy, thrilling mind-bender that delivers on many levels. We look forward to bringing it to the widest audience possible,” said Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. Buzz around the film is minimal, and IFC Midnight did not announce whether they plan to release the film in theaters or via VOD.
