Well Go USA and Variance Films have partnered to distribute
Johnnie To’s China-set crime thriller “Drug War” in North America this summer. On July 26, the film will screen at the IFC Center in New York
before a platform expansion beginning August 2 in LA and August 9 in
additional US markets as well as in Canada.
Set in the seedy underworld of drug production
and distribution in which police are pitted against a coveted ringleader,
“Drug War” has received critical acclaim since premiering at the Rome
International Film Festival in November 2012.
Variance Films and distributor Well Go USA collaborated
previously on “Ip Man 2” and “Let the Bullets Fly,” among
other Asian action titles. Johnnie To — an admirer and a reinventor of genre
— has directed dozens of films including 2013 Cannes entry “Blind Detective” — met with mixed reviews — as well as “Triad Election” (2006) and “Exiled” (2006).
