Netflix Renews Eli Roth-Produced Supernatural Series ‘Hemlock Grove’ for a Second Season

Netflix Renews Eli Roth-Produced Supernatural Series 'Hemlock Grove' for a Second Season

In its first real renewal of an original series (“House of Cards” was given two seasons off the bat), Netflix announced today that it will be bringing back the Eli Roth-executive produced “Hemlock Grove” for a second season. The supernatural drama, based on Brian McGreevy’s novel of the same name, will be given a 10-episode season round (shorter than the 13-episode order in its first season) to premiere in 2014.

“The worldwide fan response to ‘Hemlock Grove’ was phenomenal,” said Roth in the announcement. “Netflix members loved the potent combination of sexy monsters, mystery, and the dark family soap opera that ended with a huge twist, leaving audiences worldwide totally shocked. Season one was just a warm up for what we have in store for season two. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected.”

“Hemlock Grove,” which is about a small Pennsylvania town riddled with supernatural secrets, has been the poorest critical reception of Netflix’s originals so far, but apparently has performed well with viewers (Netflix does not release numbers). The show might get some help from the addition of Charles H. (Chic) Eglee (a veteran of “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter” and “The Shield”), who’s coming on as EP and showrunner for season two.

Produced by Gaumont International Television, the first season of the hour-long drama starred Famke Janssen (“X-Men”), Bill Skarsgård (“Simon & The Oaks”), Landon Liboiron (“Terra Nova”), Dougray Scott (“Mission Impossible II”) and others. Season two will go into production later this year — the series is executive produced by Roth, Eglee, McGreevy and Lee Shipman, Eric Newman and Michael Connolly.
