Netflix has a lot of confidence in “Orange is the New Black,” its original women in prison dramedy from “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan set to premiere in its 13-episode entirety on July 11 in all of the streaming service’s territories. The company has already announced a second season renewal for the hourlong series, which is produced by Lionsgate Television and based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, named Piper Chapman in the show and played by Taylor Schilling.
“Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers,” said Netflix’s Cindy Holland in the announcement. “I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence,” added Kohan.
“Orange is the New Black” is centered around the experiences of Piper after she’s sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for, a decade before, helping her then-girlfriend Alex (Laura Prepon) smuggle drugs. Now living a comfortable life in Brooklyn and engaged to a man named Larry (Jason Biggs), Piper is dropped into a prison culture she’s not at all prepared to navigate. Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning co-star.
The second season of “Orange is the New Black” is set to begin production later this summer and will premiere in 2014. Netflix recently handed out a renewal to its horror series “Hemlock Grove,” albeit for a shorter second season run with a new showrunner. The second round of “House of Cards,” which was given a two season order from the start, is currently shooting.
