Paul Schrader to Head Orizzonti Jury at 70th Venice Film Festival, 'The Canyons' Will Screen Out of Competition

Director and screenwriter Paul Schrader has been chosen as the president of the International Jury for the Orizzonti section of the upcoming Venice International Film Festival, celebrating its 70th year this August. Schrader’s new film “The Canyons,” starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, will screen out of competition at the Italian fest.

“The Canyons,” which is written by Bret Easton Ellis and is a depiction of wayward young Hollywood, was crowdfunded into production by Kickstarter campaign. Be sure to read this fascinating, in-depth New York Times profile on Lohan’s casting in the film. 

The Schrader-headed jury will award Best Film and other official prizes in the Orizzonti section, which features an international competition of a maximum of 20 feature-length films, with special attention to debut films by young talent who are not yet firmly established. The prizes awarded are:

  • Orizzonti Award for Best Film
  • Orizzonti
    Award for Best Director (new award)
  • Special
    Orizzonti Jury Prize (new award)
  • Special
    Orizzonti Award for innovative content
  • Orizzonti
    Award for Best Short Film

The Venice International Film Festival runs from August 28 through September 7, 2013.
