Showtime Renews ‘Nurse Jackie’ for a Sixth Season

Showtime Renews 'Nurse Jackie' for a Sixth Season

Jackie Peyton, the caustic but caring ER nurse and recovering addict played by Edie Falco in “Nurse Jackie,” will be back for a sixth season. Showtime’s renewal of the half-hour dramedy came shortly after the network’s announcement that “The Borgias” would be ending.

Co-produced by Showtime and Lionsgate, “Nurse Jackie” is built around a terrific performance from Falco, who won an Emmy for the role in 2010. The show’s had some struggles evolving over its run, but in recent seasons has introduced a few interesting, serious changes to Jackie’s home and work life that have forced the character to grow.

The series is currently nearing the end of its fifth year, with its season finale slated for Sunday, June 16. Clyde Phillips (“Dexter”) took over as showrunner this year after co-creators Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius exited their roles as co-showrunners to develop new projects. Merritt Wever, who’s gotten an Emmy nomination for her supporting role as Jackie’s goofily sweet coworker Zoey Barkow, co-stars in the series alongside Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli, with Bobby Cannavale and Morris Chestnut guest starring this season.

This season of the show has also seen John Cameron Mitchell make his TV directing debut with the April 21st episode “Luck of the Drawing.”

“‘Nurse Jackie’ is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series’ growth in its fifth season,” said Showtime’s David Nevins in the announcement. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”
