Snowden or Obama — Who Is More Credible?

Snowden or Obama -- Who Is More Credible?

A fantastic national drama — or, better yet, melodrama — is being played out across every international media platform.

We viewers and readers are acting as the judge and jury.

It is our job to determine who is more credible, President Barack Obama, our twice-elected U.S, President or Edward Snowden, the earnest, outspoken, nerdy NSA whistleblower.

President Obama’s interview with PBS’ Charlie Rose appeared on Monday evening. Predictably, the President did his best to shrug off the taint of a scandal in his administration. For weeks, Americans have collectively expressed outrage over the fear that the U.S.government is listening in on countless phone conversations.

All throughout Facebook and Twitter, the new measuring sticks of public taste — forget the Gallup or Roper poll — a lot of people are joking away the scandal. They speculate that the President knows what they ordered in for dinner last night or what movie they saw over the weekend — that is the extent of the severity of their personal disclosures on the phone.

Still, beneath the kidding, it is disconcerting for people to suspect that the government that they elected — after waiting in line for hours last November, in many cases — would be accused of doing something so shameful, and shameless.

It smacks of a Watergate scenario for the 21st century, with the President on one side and the media and the whistleblower (Deep Throat) turning the screws.

It is inevitable that I would introduce the dreaded “W” word — Watergate. Every time, a Sitting President causes an uproar, the term comes back to bite him.

Which one do you believe — the President or the Whistleblower? That is the question.
