The Weinstein Company’s release of British import “Unfinished Song” led a generally underwhelming batch of indie debuts this weekend (at least relative to the two weekend streak of $30,000+ average debuts that came before it).
“Marion” — which stars Terence Stamp, Gemma Arterton and Vanessa Redgrave — grossed $27,692 from 2 screens, averaging $13,846 (it also notably had the biggest jump of any other movie from Friday to Saturday). Clearly The Weinsteins are hoping to tap into the older demographic that made “Quartet” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” big hits, and this is a respectable start as it heads into expansion in the coming weeks.
Most of the notable news from the specialty market came from the holdovers. Two early summer releases — IFC Films’ “Frances Ha” and Roadside Attractions’ “Mud” — crossed major milestones. The former — directed by Noah Baumbach and starring and co-written by Greta Gerwig — went past $3 million in its sixth weekend. At this point it’s unlikely to match the $6 million its director and star’s previous collaboration “Greenberg” (though that notably had Ben Stiller in a lead role to aid in its appeal), but IFC should likely still be happy with this number (which should probably grow to over $4 million when all is said and done).
“Mud,” meanwhile, became only the second specialty release of the year after “The Place Behind The Pines” to cross the $20 million mark, an impressive feat. At $20,143,388 after 9 weeks, its also the first release from Roadside Attractions to ever cross that mark, and thus obviously also their highest grossing film ever.
Roadside is also continuing to get great numbers from Joss Whedon’s micro-budgeted “Much Ado About Nothing.” In its third weekend, the film went from 23 to 206 theaters and grossed $762,350, averaging a solid $3,700. Its total now stands at $1,234,781.
Finally, making a huge expansion jump this weekend was Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring.” Much like they did with “Spring Breakers” (which went from 3 to 1,104 screens in weekend two), A24 took “Bling” from 5 to 650 screens. The results weren’t “Spring Breaker”-sized (though surely no one expected that), but a decent $2,000,000 gross for a $3,077 average. The film’s total now stands at $2,341,241.
