Following its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival earlier this year, “The Punk Singer” has landed North American distribution with Sundance Selects. The rock documentary centers on Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre and who went on to become a pivotal figure in the riot grrrl movement of the 1990’s. Through the use of extensive archival footage as well as intimate interviews, “The Punk Singer” recounts Hanna’s ascension into the forefront of musical and cultural awareness.
Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said: “‘The Punk Singer’ is one of those great documentaries that makes you realize how much a single person can accomplish in a short span of time. From her pioneering Riot grrrl music as the front-woman for Bikini Kill and Le Tigre to her role as a feminist activist for a new generation of women, Kathleen Hanna is a complex, fascinating human being who is beautifully captured in Sini Anderson’s ‘The Punk Singer.’ We look forward to bringing the film to the multitude of Kathleen’s fans, as well as a broad audience.”
Sini Anderson directed the documentary, which Sundance Selects is planning to release in Fall 2013. You can read Indiewire’s review of the film here.
