Trailer Watch: J.D. 'Salinger' Documentary Digs Into the Mystery of the Enigmatic Author

The first trailer for Shane Salerno’s “Salinger” documentary has landed. The film, which was snapped up by the Weinstein Company in March, looks to a be an edge-of-your-seat portrait of the enigmatic, reclusive author of “The Catcher in the Rye.” Salinger died in January 2010, and hadn’t published a work since 1965.

The film features interviews with 150 subjects, including Salinger’s closest friends and colleagues who have never spoken about him before, and archival footage of the writer. Other notable personalities seen in the film include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Tom Wolfe and Gore Vidal, among others, who discuss the cultural impact of this endlessly elusive figure.

Director Salerno co-authored an oral biography of Salinger with David Shields, “The Private War of J.D. Salinger,” which is slated for publication later this year. Salerno also co-wrote Oliver Stone’s “Savages” in 2012.

The Weinstein Co. anticipates a September 6 release date, following a festival run.
