Last Wednesday, May 29, the Film Society at Lincoln Center held “An Evening with Joss Whedon,” consisting of an advanced screening of his new movie “Much Ado About Nothing” and a Q&A with the man himself. The full video — of the Q&A, not to disappoint anyone — is below, but here are a few highlights from the 35-minute discussion.
Kickstarter: Following the success of high profile Kickstarter campaigns like “Veronica Mars” and Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here,” many fans are wondering if they would get the chance to finance more of their favorite canceled shows. One of the more prominent adored-but-axed programs is Whedon’s passion project, “Firefly.” Although Whedon already managed to make a movie out of the series, fans are still eager for more (despite what the box office returns implied). When the unavoidable topic came up regarding whether or not he would explore a Kickstarter campaign for his beloved browncoats, Whedon quickly put an end to it.
“I’m not going to do that. Maybe one day I will. Maybe one day a studio will actually want me to…but right now everybody is — I’m happy to say — working very hard in very good jobs. And there’s a real fear of the monkey’s paw, where you bring it back to life and it isn’t the same. I mean even if it’s great, and it isn’t the same.”
His Dream Project: A self-described fan of Marvel comic book characters asked Whedon who he would choose if he could make a movie about any superhero in the Marvel universe. Most likely disappointing that young man but energizing the crowd around him, Whedon said he’d choose Batman. “Let’s face it — he’s the Marvel character in the DC universe.”
On “The Avengers 2”: “That’s not something I can really talk about, but Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch will be in the movie and they will be awesome.”
Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers: “I don’t have any good advice. My advice is, if you write something shoot it — because you can now, and when I started, you couldn’t. That’s my biggest advice. That’s the best I’ve got.”
What’s Next: Whedon said after “The Avengers 2” he would be interested in exploring projects outside of film and television. He said he’s “dying to make” a ballet, and also hopes to create a full length musical — great news for fans of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long-Blog.” He ended a long string of ideas by saying he hopes to do “anything that terrifies me.”
