Despite some choice roles in popular American comedies like “Night at the Museum” and “The Other Guys,” Steve Coogan has yet to catch on as a big name talent here in the States. In his home country of England, however, the comedian has managed fame not just as himself, but as the fictional radio and television presenter Alan Partridge. Coogan has been playing Partridge since the early 90s when the character came into creation during the BBC radio program, “On the Hour.” Since then, Partridge has had his own radio show and appeared on multiple television programs in England.
Now it’s time for Partridge to hit the big screen. The first trailer for “Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa,” strings together a somewhat haphazard plot involving Partridge getting a coworker fired only to have him seek his revenge on an unsuspecting Alan both in the studio and out. Co-starring the great Colm Meaney as the unjustly sacked radio host, “Alpha Papa” looks charmingly off-kilter.
Coogan’s last TV show-turned-film, “The Trip” from 2010, only scrounged up $2 million domestically before taking a short cut to Netflix. Still, it was an enjoyable and unique travel movie. We’ll have to wait and see if “Alpha Papa” is funny enough to bring Alan — and Steve — the worldwide fame they desire.
