Weird Pull Quote Theater: 'The Stroller Strategy'

And now, it’s time for another installment of Weird Pull Quote Theater!

Pull Quote: “A pleasant French confection.”

AuthorKevin Jagernauth, The Playlist

Original Quote, in Context: “This exclusive trailer for the movie gives a nice indication of the tone of the film which suggests a pleasant French confection that might be a nice break from the summer of blockbuster bloat.”

Why It’s WeirdBecause it’s not a very good compliment. “Pleasant” is how you describe a movie that passed a few hours on an airplane (“How was the flight?” “Fine. They showed some movie. I forget the title; it was pleasant.”). It’s a strange thing to throw in an ad. Pleasant? That’s it? That’s your best sales pitch?

I traced the quote back to the original review, and things got weirder — it’s not from a review at all; it’s from our sister blog, The Playlist, and a post on the trailer for “The Stroller Strategy.” As you can see above, the original quote says the trailer suggests the movie is pleasant and might be a nice break from a summer of blockbuster bloat. But, of course, it makes no promises. That may not be the weirdest pull quote we’ve highlighted in eighteen months of this blog, but it’s certainly the most pleasant.

Suggested More Accurate Pull Quote: “Just credible enough to be amusing!” — Stanley Kauffman, The New Republic
