And now, it’s time for another installment of Weird Pull Quote Theater!
From: The Village Voice, Vol. LVIII No. 23
Movie: “Violet & Daisy”
Pull Quote: “Has WIN written all over it.”
Author: Jada Yuan, New York Magazine
Original Quote, in Context: “New movie directed by ‘Precious’ screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher has “win” written all over it.”
Why It’s Weird: Because it sounds like something you’d say before you’ve actually seen a movie. As in, “Boy, ‘Violet & Daisy’ looks great. With that director and cast that thing has ‘win’ written all over it.” Typically, that line is a predictor of quality, not a description of it.
Not surprisingly, while Yuan does call “Violet & Daisy” a “future cult movie” (which would make a good pull quote) and a “bizarre, perversely funny comic-book-style look at two teenage girl assassins” (which would not), her piece is not a review; it’s an interview and party report from the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Interestingly, none of the three pull quotes in this ad come from reviews; the others, from the Los Angeles Times and the Montclair Times, are also from Fletcher interviews. I haven’t read them yet, but they look good. I dare say they’ve got win written all over them.
