5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (And Film Fans) Must Read: Geek Week, VOD and More

5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (And Film Fans) Must Read: Geek Week, VOD and More

1. Geek Week: YouTube has been making an effort to promote
original content with themed weeks such as May’s Comedy Week. Next up is Geek Week, from August 4-10, produced in conjunction
with Nerdist. YouTube will highlight geek videos and shows
already on YouTube and debut new videos, series premieres and creative
collaborations. More info on the week’s programming lineup will be available at
youtube.com/geekweek. Geek out!

2. VOD: After Anthony Kaufman looked into the latest developments in digital distribution, he is still on the fence as to whether digital and VOD distribution is good or bad for the business. Oversupply is a problem and theatrical releases are key, but, in short, VOD is “better than nothing.” Agree?

3. Apple: Apple earned $7.47 per share on $35.3 billion in revenue in its fiscal third quarter, beating the expectations of analysts, the company announced Tuesday. They sold 31.2 million iPhones in the quarter, up from 26 million a year ago; 14.6 million iPads, down from 17 million in the year-ago quarter; and 3.8 million Mac computers, down from 4 million. Not bad at all!

4. Kickstarter: Steven Soderbergh has backed Spike Lee’s Kickstarter campaign to the tune of $10 million. Lee has 27 more days in which to meet his goal of $1.25 million and he’s already broken the $135,000 mark, in part with $10,000 from Soderbergh.

5. Cinely: Speaking of crowdfunding, Cinely is billing itself as an alternative to sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter, with an emphasis on filmmaking. TheNextWeb.com describes Cinely as “a social network for those looking to tap into talent and collaborate on projects….if you’re a writer, director, cameraman and actor all in one but don’t have the first clue about costumes or composing music, well, this is where Cinely could help.” Sounds great. We look forward to checking it out.
