ABC Family Cancels 'Bunheads'

Bunheads,” the wonderfully weird dramedy about ballerinas, spontaneous Vegas marriages and quirky California small town life from “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, has, sadly, been canceled. ABC Family announced the news this afternoon, releasing the following statement:

‘Bunheads’ is a wonderful series that we are very proud to have aired. The series had amazing storytelling, the most talented cast and a passionate and loyal fan base. Recognizing all of this, we took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back for another season, but in the end it simply wasn’t possible. We wish the cast and crew the best in their future endeavors

The series featured Broadway star Sutton Foster as Michelle Simms, a former professional Broadway dancer turned aging showgirl who impulsively marries an admirer (Alan Ruck) one drunken night, only to find herself widowed shortly after and in possession of the house and dance studio still run by his mother Fanny (Kelly Bishop).

It was an odd but very likable show that took a while to figure out how to balance Michelle’s delayed coming of age with the stories of the quartet of ballet students (Kaitlyn Jenkins, Julia Goldani Telles, Bailey Buntain and Emma Dumont) she ends up mentoring — possibly why the show wasn’t a big ratings success with ABC Family’s young primary audience. But the single season certainly earned its following among fully grown critics, with a truly memorable main character struggling to redefine her identity as her days of being a carefree drifter come to an end.

The now final episode of the 18 in the “Bunheads” run aired back in February — ABC Family left the show’s fate undecided for an unusual amount of time while it waited to see how other new series would fare. At least it ended on a bittersweet but hopeful note, with Michelle going to an audition for the first time in ages, and reminding herself both of the brutal process that is showbiz and of her own talent.
