Bong Joon-Ho's Sci-Fi Thriller 'Snowpiercer' Receives First Round of Rave Reviews

With an impressive cast and icy dystopian sheen, Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi thriller and English-language debut “Snowpiercer” has been racking up a lot of interest lately. For a while that interest had only been sated by trailers and photos, but as the film prepares for its South Korean release date, a few sets of eyes have finally watched the entire film. The result has been enthusiastic, putting “Snowpiercer” on par with if not above its Bong-directed peers “The Host” and “Mother.”

Based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” the post-apocalyptic epic takes place in a dystopian future where global warming has rendered earth in another ice age. Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton, Ewan Bremner, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Song Kang-ho and Go Ah-sung co-star as survivors on a perpetually moving train, whereupon class divisions have set in and a revolution is brewing.

Variety critic Scott Foundas wrote that the film is “an enormously ambitious, visually stunning and richly satisfying futuristic epic,” citing its stellar performances and “nuanced character-building scenes.” The review at Twitch was equally glowing, with Pierce Conran calling the film a breathtaking tour de force of science fiction.

While there is no set date for a U.S. release, hopefully “Snowpiercer” will fulfill our wishlist and appear stateside for the fall festival circuit. Below you can watch a trailer, as well as a special animated prequel.
