HIFF SummerDocs Series Closing with ‘Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me’ & ‘The Short Game’

HIFF SummerDocs Series Closing with 'Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me' & 'The Short Game'

The Fifth Annual SummerDocs series hosted by the Hamptons International Film Festival is coming to a close in August with two festival favorites. “Elaine Strich: Shoot Me,” which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, will be shown on August 12 while “The Short Game” is set to close out the festival on August 30 after premiering at SXSW in March.

The SummerDocs series strives to present East End audiences with the best in documentary filmmaking, and at least one board member thinks they’ve done well in 2013. “David [Nugent, HIFF Artistic Director] has a good eye for documentaries that lead to good discussion programs after,” said Alec Baldwin, HIFF Advisor Board Member. “I think SummerDocs has been a great success.”

Baldwin’s “30 Rock” onscreen mother is the focus of the series’ second to last documentary. Featuring interviews with Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, John Turturro, Baldwin, and the late James Gandolfini, “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me” focuses on the 87-year-old Broadway legend’s continued dominance as a performing artist. The 80-minute retrospective features archival footage of Stritch from past performances as well as new footage of her in her one woman cabaret act.

“The Short Game,” meanwhile, deals with subjects of an opposite field. Instead of one veteran thespian artist, its focus is on nine 7-year-old golfers. These young phenoms are competing at the Pinehurst Golf course in North Carolina for the world championship of golf and trying to determine the next PGA all star while they’re at it.

“From 7 year old golf prodigies, to an 87 year old Broadway legend, the final two films in this year’s SummerDocs series are touching, fun, and provide a real look at the challenge of consistency in doing what one loves at the highest level, day in and day out at any age,” said David Nugent.
