Hollywood Reporter Executive Editor Owen Phillips Is Gone

Nothing lasts forever, and toiling for Janice Min at The Hollywood Reporter takes its toll. Word has been circulating for weeks that Owen Phillips, executive editor for The Hollywood Reporter, was on his way out after more than two years. That shoe has dropped. Phillips leaves Friday. (Min’s staff memo is below.)

As successful as the weekly THR is, it’s tough to work for because Min loves to improve and tinker up to the last possible minute. That makes the glossy glamour rag timely and fun. But it’s hard on the editors who must make her wishes so. “I’m very proud of everything the staff at THR has accomplished,” Phillips stated. “I’ll miss both the veterans and the new crew — and maybe even the all-nighters.”

Phillips deserves some credit–along with Min and her lieutenants, executive editor Matt Belloni and film editor Gregg Kilday– for reestablishing the THR brand and giving it dominance in the trade space. THR stands above Jay Penske’s Deadline and newly revamped Variety, as well as The Wrap. Phillips is taking a consulting post with Jeff Stern‘s Alegra Enterprises, where he’ll be “creating content – in entertainment and beyond – for new distribution channels, particularly mobile.”

Phillips moved out from the East Coast after editing for WSJ magazine, Men’s Vogue and The New Yorker.

Dear Staff:

I am writing to let you know that after nearly three years, Owen Phillips will be departing The Hollywood Reporter. As many of you know, Owen was a key part of the team that was here from the beginning of the relaunch of The Hollywood Reporter, and part of a group that took a leap of faith, relocating from New York to Los Angeles to help implement our reinvention. It was a gamble that paid off beyond anyone’s expectation for our staff and readers alike. During his time, he worked closely with much of the edit staff, business side, our international team and our critics.

Today we have the finest entertainment operation in the business. In November, The Hollywood Reporter print and digital editions will celebrate their third anniversary. I am grateful to Owen for his dedication and efforts during this time.

In his next move, he will be serving as a consultant to Jeff Stern’s Alegra Enterprises to develop media and entertainment properties. His last day with The Hollywood Reporter is Friday. Please join me in wishing him all the best.
