James Gray Will Direct the First Episode of Sundance Channel’s Original Drama ‘The Red Road’

James Gray Will Direct the First Episode of Sundance Channel's Original Drama 'The Red Road'

Sundance Channel has managed a major coup for its second original drama “The Red Road.” The network announced today that James Gray (“The Immigrant,” “Two Lovers,” “We Own The Night”) will direct the first episode of “The Red Road,” the new series from writer Aaron Guzikowski (“Contraband,” “Prisoners”) and producer Sarah Condon (“Bored to Death”).

This will be Gray’s first TV directing gig. “We are thrilled that James Gray has signed on to direct the first episode of ‘The Red Road,'” said Sundance Channel’s Nena Rodrigue. “He has a distinct point of view that will set a powerful tone for the series. His ability to get terrific performances out of actors and to create tough minded emotional thrillers with a heart will be a great asset to ‘The Red Road.'”

“The Red Road,” which was formerly entitled “The Descendants” (it’s unrelated to the Alexander Payne film) also recently announced the casting of Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones”) in a lead role. The six-episode hourlong drama revolves around two clashing communities — a small town and its neighboring Ramapo Mountain Indian tribe — and the sheriff who polices both while getting involved with a dangerous member of the tribe after a tragedy involving his wife. Bridget Carpenter (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”) is the showrunner.

Gray’s latest film “The Immigrant,” premiered at Cannes and will be released in the U.S. by the Weinstein Company.
