Nelson Mandela to Take Over Times Square Billboard Screens with Help from Tribeca Film Institute

As Nelson Mandela is reportedly making “dramatic progress,” the former South African president and anti-apartheid leader’s 95th birthday is tomorrow.  In honor of Mandela’s birthday, the Tribeca Film Institute is taking over the screens in Times Square that usually deluge people with advertisements.  The screening is short, just a few minutes long, but starts tomorrow July 18 at 7:15 PM.

In a press release from the Tribeca Film Institute, the organization explained the Times Square project and also teased a short film omnibus that will be announced soon, in which five directors will each make a short film inspired by a Mandela quote.

The words of Nelson Mandela—derived from several of his most poignant speeches—will collide, float, pour, and burst onto a cosmic blue background in the collaborative work, created by Nabil Elderkin, Andrew van der Westhuyzen, and Gregory Stern. “The Power of Words” project, supported by Montblanc, was created in cooperation with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Tribeca Film Institute to inspire filmmakers to create short films that highlight the enduring impact of words and the resonance of Mandela’s message through multiple eras and generations.

The initiative will continue later this year when Nabil Elderkin and four additional filmmakers work with the Tribeca Film Institute and Out of Africa Entertainment, as well as youth from Boys & Girls Club of America chapters across the country to create original short films based on quotes from Mandela’s teachings that will be released over the next nine months.  Kweku Mandela, a partner in Out of Africa Entertainment, is spearheading this project in tribute to his grandfather’s legacy and in support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s mission to reach future generations.
