NYT Op-Docs Series to Offer Filmmaker Competition and Expand Screenings

The New York Times’s Op-Docs, a series of short documentaries run by the newspaper’s editorial department, is set to reach more audiences and filmmakers than ever before, as it has added a filmmaker competition and a series of screenings.

Op-Docs invites documentary short filmmakers to apply to a live pitch opportunity at this year’s Camden International Film Festival. Six finalists will be chosen to present their films onstage in front of a live audience and judging panel, which will take place as part of the Festival’s Points North Documentary Forum. The winner will be given a $2,000 budget to produce an official Op-Doc to premiere on NYTimes.com.

In addition to the screenings at the Camden Film Festical, a  screening of the 10 most acclaimed Op-Docs will take place in July in San Francisco and Los Angeles, giving Op-Doc filmmakers invaluable exposure to the California documentary community.

“Since we launched the Op-Docs series in November 2011, we’ve published more than 70 short documentaries and established a distinctive, highly popular forum for independent filmmaking,” said Jason Spingarn-Koff, who produces the series and is commissioning editor of Opinion video for The New York Times.  “We’re excited to continue building awareness with these events in California and New England, showcasing our work on the big screen and encouraging more filmmakers to become involved.”

The upcoming live pitch event at Camden comes off of the success of an Op-Docs pitch competition in England at the Sheffield Doc/Fest.
