Steve Coogan Fans Use Social Media to Change Premiere Venue

Steve Coogan fans have spoken. Using Facebook and Twitter, hardcore fans lobbied to move the premiere of Coogan’s new film, “Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa,” from London’s Leicester Square to Norwich, England, the brash fictional broadcaster’s home town.

More than 7,000 people joined a Facebook campaign to secure the first showing of the movie in Norwich and a Twitter campaign #angliasquarenotleicestersquare has petitioned for the movie to premiere in Norwich.

There’s even a YouTube component to the campaign, featuring singer Laura Morrell singing “Partridge State of Mind.” Check it out below.

Guess what? It worked! The studio agreed to move the world premiere to Anglia Square in Norwich on Wednesday, July 24th before Alan Partridge/Steve Coogan boards a helicopter for London so he can attend the London premiere that night in Leicester Square.

In a message tweeted by writer Armando Iannucci and distributor StudioCanalUK, Partridge said, “You can imagine how hurt and litigious I felt when people said I was planning to debut my movie in London instead of Norwich, or that I’d allowed my head to be turned by the prospect of big city fame. Any suggestion I’ve hastily cobbled together the lunchtime Norwich screening in response to a local Twitter campaign will be met with the full force of the law.”

StudioCanalUK is using the internet kerfuffle to promote the film with Twitter giveaways to the premiere. The film will be rolled out across the U.K. beginning August 7, but it has no U.S. distribution.

On the Facebook page, “Campaign for Alan Partridge Movie Premiere to Be in Norwich,” the administrator basked in the campaign’s success. “Without your support and enthusiasm it wouldn’t have got noticed by the powers that be..It all started as a bit of a joke but now it is our time, lets have a good time and show everyone what Norwich is capable of.”
