Trailer of the Week: Keri Russell Goes from Jane Austen Fan to 'Orphan of No Fortune' in 'Austenland'

Before the Trailer, We Thought: Jane Austen ‘superfans’ signing up to relinquish all modern possessions and immerse themselves in an Austen reenactment boot camp? Sign us up. Or maybe we’ll just watch (and laugh) at how it works out for Keri Russell’s character in “Austenland,” the feature debut of “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” co-writer Jerusha Hess. The comedy premiered at Sundance where it got picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. It opens August 16.

And Now? We get a peek at her Mr. Darcy shrine of a bedroom. She even has a life-size cardboard cut-out of Colin Firth. We get an even more in depth look at the strict rules of Austenland. We get a delightful taste of Jennifer Coolidge’s well-meaning but ditzy best friend character. And we get to see Russell start to shed her fangirl geekery and transform into a beautiful, poised Regency butterfly ready to snag a marriageable man. We’re rooting for her now even more. Happy hunting.

The film isn’t the first to explore the premise of a modern Austenite plunging headfirst into Austen-esque circumstances (“The Jane Austen Book Club,” “Lost in Austen”), but we like this new take on historical romcom genre for the sheer idea of a single, hot mess of a woman who can’t find love in the real world trying to find “the one” in “the world’s only immersive Austen experience.”
