WATCH: First Trailer for McQueen's '12 Years a Slave,' Starring Ejiofor and Fassbender

The first trailer for Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” has arrived. The Fox Searchlight title stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, a free black man in the pre-Civil War United States who is abducted and sold into slavery. The sprawling cast includes Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Alfre Woodard and Lupita Nyong’o. Watch below.

As with the trailer for McQueen’s previous film, “Shame” (also starring Fassbender), the Hans Zimmer score from Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” is used to moving effect.

The film’s release date was recently moved forward to October 18, in time for prime Oscar season and a likely run on the fall festival circuit.
