After experiencing some substantial delays, Wong Kar-Wai’s long-awaited “The Grandmaster” is finally coming out, having opened in its native China back in January and opening stateside via The Weinstein Company next month. A new domestic trailer has just been unveiled, which offers a closer look at the life of Chinese martial arts master Ip Man (Tony Leung), focusing on his training from a young age all the way up to opening a prestigious martial arts school before his death in 1972.
As per usual with Kar-wai’s films, there’s a heavy dosage of visually intoxication as he captures the hurtling limbs and bodies of martial arts fights, making every frame a thing of beauty. The appearance of Zhang Ziyi, most notable stateside for her role in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” also provides a treat.
“The Grandmaster” opens August 23.
