WATCH TRAILER: In 'Saving Mr. Banks,' Hanks as Disney Courts Thompson as 'Mary Poppins' Scribe UPDATE

The first trailer from director John Lee Hancock’s “Saving Mr. Banks” starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson has arrived. In the film, Hanks plays studio chief Walt Disney, who brings uptight and controlling Brit author P.L. Travers, played by Thompson, from London to Hollywood in the early 1960s as the studio tries to adapt her bestselling children’s novel “Mary Poppins” for the screen.

The biopic, which is penned by Kelly Marcel (the “Fifty Shades of Grey” scribe who is also on board for Joe Wright’s “Little Mermaid” adaptation), also stars Paul Giamatti, Colin Farrell and Jason Schwartzman.

Early buzz on the film is upbeat. Disney has set its release date for prime Oscar season: December 13 limited, and December 20 wide.

In that vein, Hancock is the writer-director of “The Blind Side,” which won Sandra Bullock an Oscar for Best Actress in 2010. Hanks can also be seen this fall in another award-season entry, Paul Greengrass’ maritime thriller “Captain Phillips.”
