Sony Pictures Classics has decided that the time is right to expand “Blue Jasmine,” Woody Allen’s 44th feature starring Cate Blanchett, from 229 to over 1,200 screens nationwide this weekend. This far surpasses the “Midnight in Paris” screen count of 1038, marking “Blue Jasmine” as the widest release of any Allen film.
So far “Blue Jasmine” is on track to outgross “Midnight,” which topped out at $56 million domestically; “Jasmine” has scored $9,943,025 million at the box office since its July 26th limited release. On its opening weekend, the film averaged $102,011 per screen in six theaters – one of the top limited openings of all time.
The film is also in the awards conversation, with Blanchett currently the favorite for Best Actress. Needless to say there are many movies still to be seen.
