Janus Films Nabs Paolo Sorrentino's Palme d'Or Nominee 'The Great Beauty' (TRAILER)

Janus Films has picked up all US rights to Italian director Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” (“La Grande Bellezza”), nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2013. The film screens at TIFF in September. Here’s the synopsis:

Journalist Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) has been a permanent fixture in Rome’s literary and social circles since the legendary success of his one and only novel. He has seduced his way through the city’s lavish night life for decades, but when his 65th birthday coincides with a shock from the past, Jep finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life.

Manohla Dargis of NYT called the film “an outlandishly entertaining hallucination” and a contemporary take on Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.” Rapturously received at Cannes, this was Sorrentino’s fifth Palme d’Or nomination including 2011’s Sean Penn starrer “This Might Be The Place,” winner of the ecumenical jury prize.

“The Great Beauty” will open theatrically in NY on November 15, 2013 before expanding to other cities. A DVD/Blu-ray release from Criterion will follow. Watch the Italian trailer, with French subtitles, below. Fans of Fellini will note that some shots directly homage “La Dolce Vita,” including Anita Ekberg’s famous party scene in a Roman piazza.
