Neill Blomkamp's Next Project, A.I. Robot Film 'Chappie,' To Be Produced by Sony

Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC will be co-producing Neill Blomkamp’s “Chappie,” the director’s follow-up to this past weekend’s “Elysium.” The script, written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, centers on an Artificial Intelligence robot, named Chappie, stolen by a duo of gangsters who plan to use it for their own corrupt purposes.

Blomkamp muse Sharlto Copley will voice the robot. Ninja and Yolandi
Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of
rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, will play the two gangsters.

Production is expected to begin this fall.

“Elysium,” which stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Copley and opened to a decent $30 million this past weekend in the top box-office spot, was Sony’s first number one film this year since spring horror remake “Evil Dead.”
