Project of the Day: A Man Searches for His Birth Family After His Adopted Mother Dies

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Tweetable Logline:

After the death of his adopted mother, a man travels from Canada to rural India desperately searching for his birth family.

Elevator Pitch:

When Roger Moreau’s adopted mother dies unexpectedly he loses the last tie he has to his Canadian upbringing. He travels to India to search for the birth family that gave him up for adoption 30 years ago.

His journey takes him into the dark alleys, dusty roads and cramped train cars of India’s underclass as he tries to connect the threads of his story. Ultimately, he is pushed to his breaking point and forced to confront the ghosts that have been haunting him his entire life – only then is he able to discover the truth.

Production Team:

Writer/Director – Sami Khan
Director of Photography – Kevin C.W. Wong (WORLD WAR II IN HD)
Executive Producer – Guneet Monga (THE LUNCHBOX, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR)
Cast – Rupak Ginn (ROYAL PAINS, THE NAMESAKE), Stephen McHattie (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, 300), Ravi Khanwilkar (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI)

About the Production:

“KHOYA comes out of my experience searching for my long-lost brother. Throughout this process I’ve been struck by how often I’ve talked to friends who have stories similar to my own to tell: of having families separated and scarred, and struggling to navigate these problems in this complex, interconnected world. This film is about those universal struggles and, above all, KHOYA is about the desperate yearning we all have for that fleeting place we call home.” – Sami Khan
