Queue It Up: Here Are 9 Jane Austen Films Available to Stream (In Honor Of 'Austenland' Opening This Weekend)

Austenland” — out this Friday via Sony Pictures Classics — stars Keri Russell as Jane Hayes, a
single thirtysomething obsessed with Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice
who heads off to the titular British resort where the
Austen era is re-created.

In honor of it’s release, we have drawn up this list of streamable cinematic adaptations of Austen novels — both loose and formal — get your own Austen-excitement levels as revved up as Keri Russell’s character in the film (or close enough).  Here’s nine:

“Emma” (1996)

This adaptation of “Emma,” starring Gwyneth Paltrow, is always well-loved among Austenites.

Where to stream: Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus

“Emma” (2009)

BBC gave “Emma” the miniseries treatment in 2009, to the delight of Austen fans.

Where to stream: Prime Instant Video

“Pride and Prejudice” (1980)

This BBC miniseries from the 80s tends to get forgotten alongside the faithful BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth and the glamorous Joe Wright-Keira Knightley adaptation from 2005, but why not give it a shot?

Where to stream: Netflix and Prime Instant Video

“Mansfield Park” (1983)

Another 80s miniseries worth checking out.

Where to stream: Netflix

“Mansfield Park” (2007)

This recent adaptation starring Billie Piper was part of the series “The Complete Jane Austen,” in which Masterpiece Theater and PBS presented the six film adaptations in a row, with everything but “Emma” and “Pride and Prejudice” getting a facelift.

Where to stream: Netflix and Prime Instant Video

“Persuasion” (1995)

This go-to adaptation of “Persuasion” starring Ciarán Hinds as the romantic lead is always a winner.

Where to stream: Prime Instant Video

“Metropolitan” (1990)

We’re getting into loose adaptation territory here, folks. “Metropolitan” borrows plot from “Mansfield Park,” not to mention the characters discuss Jane Austen. It’s also a great movie in it’s own right.

Where to stream: Netflix

“Clueless” (1995)

Let’s not forget that the 90s classic featuring Alicia Silverstone as a well-meaning but sometimes foolish matchmaker is based on “Emma.”

Where to stream: Netflix and Prime Instant Video

“The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” (2012)

Although it was born on the internet, this modern day adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” in vlog format has been quite popular. If you haven’t seen it, what better time to start?
