Watch Ian Harnarine's Award-Winning 'Doubles With Slight Pepper' (Short Shouts!)

Last fall, Ian Harnarine’s short film, Doubles with Slight Pepper, which was exec produced by Spike Lee, won the Telefilm Canada Pitch This! contest at the Toronto Film Festival, which carried a prize of C$10,000 – money which Ian will use to adapt the short film into a feature film.

Ian, who grew up in Toronto, the son of immigrants from Trinidad, was one of 6 Canadians to pitch feature projects to what is said to have been a “packed industry crowd” at the TIFF Lightbox last September.

The synopsis for Doubles with Slight Pepper reads:

Growing up in a poverty stricken village, Dhani supports himself and mother by selling doubles in the busy market. One day, he receives a letter from his father, Ragbir, inviting him to spend Christmas in Toronto. Against his mother’s protests, Dhani accepts the offer hoping to get the deed to his father’s land in Trinidad — their ticket out of poverty. Upon landing in the throes of a Canadian winter, Dhani learns that his father’s life is far more meager than he expected. A doctor explains that Ragbir is mortally sick. His only request is to enjoy a meal with Dhani: doubles with medium pepper.

Long time readers of S&A will know that Harnarine, who has graduate degrees in both Nuclear Physics and Film, has been working with Spike Lee on adapting Dr. Ronald L. Mallett’s book Time Traveler, and is also doing the same, solo, with David Chariandy’s novel Soucouyant.

Earlier last year, Harnarine received an Award of Recognition from the Government of Trinidad & Tobago for his outstanding contribution to film, at the CaribbeanTales Youth Film Festival Gala, co-hosted with TIFF.

Go forth young man and turn that short film into a feature film! And, as I previously told Ian, I’m especially looking forward to seeing what he and Spike to with Time Traveler – a sci-fi/drama novel I read a few years ago and reviewed.

In the meantime, before it becomes a feature, watch his award-winning Doubles with Slight Pepper in full below:
