Watch: Trailer for One Direction Film that Sent Fans Into a Tizzy

Last night’s UK screening of the Channel 4 documentary “Crazy About One Direction,” caused quite a stir in the British boy band’s home country.  The film focuses on the “weirder” elements of 1D fandom, including the fans that follow the group so closely they might be called stalkers, those that hope that Louie and Harry are in a homosexual relationship, those that threaten to kill themselves if the group members don’t follow them on Twitter or retweet them.

In a move that highlights the way that such explorations of “weird” fandom can come off as bullying, some fans of One Direction, who on the whole are incredibly astute in their Twitter use, started a rumor that several One Direction fans, specifically Larry shippers (“Larry” is a portmanteau of Louie and Harry; shippers is a general fan term for fans that hope that two people are in a relationship) were bullied in such an extreme way following the film’s screening that they killed themselves. The hashtag #RIPlarryshippers has been trending.

In response, group member Liam Payne tweeted he was “hearing some horrible things” and went on to express his love and appreciation to all of his fans.

“Super Size Me” director Morgan Spurlock is getting his own chance to represent the band in the upcoming documentary “One Direction: This Is Us,” which will hit theaters August 29 (in 3D).
