5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (And Film Fans) Need to Read: VOD Numbers, First Cut Pro and More

1. VOD Numbers: Liesl Copland, of WME’s Global Finance and Distribution
and Digital Media groups, discussed the future of Big Data and the need
to change the system in a rousing speech at the TIFF Doc Conference yesterday afternoon. She emphasized the importance of transparency in the VOD industry
and called upon filmmakers to demand it. Read her speech here.

2. Dick Figures: After raising over $300,000 on Kickstarter, the animated YouTube show “Dick Figures” will get its own feature-length movie on
various digital platforms via Cinedigm and Yekra. “Dick
Figures: the Movie” will be released as 12 weekly, ad-supported chapters
on YouTube and also made available in its entirety on Google Play, as

3. Starz: Starz Digital Media just launched a new comedy channel, Union Pool, on YouTube. The channel launched with “Tvoovies,” an animated pop-culture mashup, “Actor’s Studio” send-up “Hollywood Acting Studio”; and “Captain Cornelius
Cartoon’s Cartoon Lagoon,” a “puppet animation adventure.” New episodes will go up every Tuesday and Thursday.

4. First Cut Pro: You’ve heard of Final Cut Pro. Now a new cloud-based collaboration tool, First Cut Pro, has launched. The new tool lets editing teams monitor changes that are made during the post-production process. Sounds ideal for groups working remotely on a project. Find out more details over at TechCrunch.

5. Target Ticket: We wrote about the new digital video service from Target earlier this week, but Variety has more info on the retailer’s plans to compete with Netflix here. Apparently, to attract new users, Target Ticket will offer new customers 10 free movie downloads when they sign up. Are you interested?
