'Boardwalk Empire' Gets a Fifth-Season Renewal From HBO

Boardwalk Empire” kicked off its fourth season on September 8th, and today HBO confirmed the Prohibition drama will be back for another round at the speakeasy. The premium network has renewed the series for a fifth season, as it continues to be one of its most-watched original shows as well as the recipient of five Emmys this year, including a supporting actor prize for Bobby Cannavale.

“Thanks to Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Howard Korder and their stellar team, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ remains in a class by itself,” said HBO’s Michael Lombardo in the renewal announcement. “I look forward to another electrifying season of this impeccably crafted series.”

The period drama is one of the most pedigreed on television, if never quite as coherent as HBO’s landmark series like “The Sopranos,” “The Wire” and “Deadwood.” Steve Buscemi stars as Nucky Thompson, the top dog in 1920s Atlantic City, and is joined by Stephen Graham, Kelly Macdonald, Gretchen Mol, Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael K. Williams, among others. This season, Jeffrey Wright has joined the cast as a new antagonist for Nucky, Dr. Valentin Narcisse.
