‘Fifty Shades’ Producer Responds to ‘Fifty Shades’ of Outrage Over Casting News

'Fifty Shades' Producer Responds to 'Fifty Shades' of Outrage Over Casting News

After a year’s wait, the casting for the film adaptation of best selling book, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was announced yesterday with Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam cast as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, and disgruntled fans took to Twitter to protest.

But ‘Fifty Shades’ producer Dana Brunetti, whom irate fans called “an idiot,” “a bastard,” “a beast” and worse, took the complaints in stride, saying he “knew it would happen.”

“You could never meet the expectations of
so many who have visualized their different ideas of characters from how
they read it in a book,” Brunetti told Indiewire. “While some are upset that their favorite wasn’t
chosen, there has been a massive response and excitement to Charlie and
Dakota from the fans. Ultimately we cast who is right for the role on
many factors, but most importantly the chemistry between the two, and it
is great between Dakota and Charlie.”

The book’s author, E L James, tweeted the casting news yesterday, writing, “I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed
to be our Anastasia” and “the gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey” in the film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Some fans complained that Johnson, best known for playing Kate
in the now defunct Fox comedy series “Ben and Kate,” didn’t have enough acting credentials or a big enough name (despite her famous parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) and that Hunnam (“Pacific Rim,” “Sons of Anarchy”) is “too old for the role.”

The erotic books (which originated
as fan fiction for the “Twilight” series) follow the relationship between
a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and young businessman Christian

Seems fans had already cast the roles to Matt Bomer and Alexis Bleidel. There is even an online petition over at Change.org to have Bomer
and Bleidel play Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele in the film
adaptation. More than 6,500 fans have signed so far.

James didn’t seem to take the criticism personally, tweeting yesterday, “To all of the supporters, lovers and haters – thank you so much for the passion that you have for this project. You all rock. All of you.”

What do you think about the casting of Hunnam and Johnson? Will you see the film?
