The first trailer and images for the long-awaited “RoboCop,” a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 dystopian, ultra-violent cult classic, have finally arrived.
The reboot stars dreamy svelte hunk Joel Kinnaman (AMC’s “The Killing”) as Alex Murphy, a cop critically injured in the line of duty who undergoes a transformation into a half-human, half-robot super-cop hybrid after selling his soul to a corporation. Check out stills below, plus more images and a trailer after the jump.
Directed by Jose Padilha (who directed both of Brazil’s “Elite Squad” films), this iteration was written by Nick Schenk, David Self, James Vanderbilt and Joshua Zetumer. The film’s estimable ensemble includes Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle and Jackie Earle Haley.
Potential directors and cast were shuffling around until 2012, when Kinnaman was officially announced to star. Originally, Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct, but opted for his upcoming passion project “Noah.” Michael Fassbender and Matthias Schoenaerts were also in talks for the title role that went to Kinnaman.
“RoboCop” is set for release in 2014, via Sony Pictures. TOH! covered the film — which, judging from preview footage, actually looked good — at ComicCon and spoke with Brazilian helmer Padilha (read that story here). Could it jumpstart a new franchise?
