HBO Renews 'Boardwalk Empire' for a Fifth Season

Even though Emmy-winning “Boardwalk Empire” got off to a soft start in its the fourth-season debut on Sept. 8 (TOH review here), HBO has renewed Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese and Tim Van Patten’s ’20s period gangster series or a fifth season said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Steve Buscemi continues to carry the show as the riveting Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the leader of Atlantic City, with able support from Jack Huston, Michael Kenneth Williams and emerging villain Brian Geraghty.

While ratings are down from last season, the series, which won five Emmys Sunday night, remains one of HBO’s most-watched original programs, with an average gross audience of 7.5 million viewers this season. Unfortunately, supporting actor winner Bobby Cannavale (SPOILER) was one of the many casualties in season three.
