Hulu Renews Seth Meyers' Animated Superhero Comedy 'The Awesomes' for a Second Season

While Netflix opted to pull out all the stops in its grand foray into original series this year, and Amazon has been attracting attention with an unusual pilot process in which viewer data was used to determine which projects would be greenlit, Hulu has been quieter in its efforts to launch its own shows. The streaming site has stuck to lighter comedies and nonfiction series like Richard Linklater’s “Up to Speed,” Morgan Spurlock’s “A Day in the Life,” mockumentary “Battleground” and improvised Western “Quick Draw.”

Hulu’s highest profile original to date has been “The Awesomes,” an animated comedy from Seth Meyers and his former “SNL” colleague Mike Shoemaker about a group of lower tier superheroes voiced by Meyers along with Ike Barinholtz, Rashida Jones, Taran Killam, Bobby Lee and others. The series, which premiered on August 1st, bounced around from Syfy to MTV in the years before it ended up at Hulu, but has been performing well for the streaming site, regularly being one of its 10 most-watched shows. And today, Hulu announced it was ordering a second 10-episode season of “The Awesomes” to premiere next year.

While the first season will end on September 26th with the second half of a two-part finale, the second season, Hulu promises, will feature new supervillains, superheroes and an unexpected love triangle. The series is executive produced by Meyers, Shoemaker and Broadway Video’s Andrew Singer, with Bento Box Entertainment (“Bob’s Burgers”) serving as the animation studio. Check out the first half of the season finale below.
