Sony and Megan Ellison’s Annapurna are partnering on a presumably R-rated comedy from co-writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg (who together wrote and directed this summer’s sleeper apocalyptic raunchfest “This Is the End”), Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir. This decidedly not-for-kids animated film will be titled “Sausage Party,” and has Conrad Vernon (“Shrek 2”) on board to direct.
So what’s the plot of “Sausage Party”? A hotdog goes on a quest to discover the truth about his existence. He has a mishap after falling out of shopping cart, and must embark on a perilous journey through the wilds of the supermarket to be displayed once again in his aisle before the 4th of July comes and goes.
The film will be produced by Ellison, Rogen, Goldberg and Vernon, with Jonah Hill included as an executive producer. Vancouver’s Nitrogen Studios will handle all CG animation and post-production.
Sony is eyeing a release date in 2015. Given that Rogen and Goldberg delivered one of the few bright spots on the 2013 Sony slate–which was so dismal that the studio felt forced to sack two respected marketing executives, Steve Elzer and Marc Weinstock, as sacrificial fall guys–it makes sense that the studio would want to stay in business with these filmmakers.
