Jeff Daniels Says 'The Newsroom' Has Been Renewed for a Third Season

“It’s official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3,” Jeff Daniels tweeted last night. And since Daniels plays Will McAvoy on “The Newsroom,” and Will McAvoy is the shining example of journalistic integrity in a media landscape gone wild (as well as the lead character on the show), we’re going to take him at his word, though HBO has yet to officially confirm the news.

The renewal doesn’t come as a surprise — at the TCAs in July, HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler and its president of programming Michael Lombardo said that renewal odds were “excellent” for the Aaron Sorkin drama, with Lombardo explaining that “the conversations with Aaron are all about schedule” and that he’d be “shocked” if they weren’t announcing plans for a third season soon.

The current second season of “The Newsroom” is nearing its end — it will wrap up with a two-parter, “Election Night,” the second half of which will air on September 15th.
