WATCH: Exclusive New Clip from TIFF Conspiracy Thriller 'Pioneer,' with Wes Bentley

Watch an exclusive clip from Erik Skjoldbjaerg’s early 80s-set conspiracy film “Pioneer,” slated to play the Toronto International Film Festival this month. A thriller in the vein of “Chinatown” and “The Conversation,” the film stars Aksel Hennie (“Headhunters”), Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang and Stephanie Sigman. Here’s the official synopsis:

This conspiracy thriller is set in the early 80’s, the beginning of the Norwegian Oil Boom. Enormous oil and gas deposits are discovered in the North Sea and the authorities aim to bring the oil ashore through a pipeline from depths of 500 meters. A professional diver, Petter, obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea has the discipline, strength and courage to take on the world’s most dangerous mission. But a sudden, tragic accident changes everything. Petter is sent on a perilous journey where he loses sight of who’s pulling the strings. Gradually he realizes that he is in way over his head and that his life is at stake.

No stranger to TIFF, Norwegian director Skjoldbjaerg previously helmed the original “Insomnia” (1997), adapted into an American remake by Christopher Nolan in 2002, and “Prozac Nation” (2001). Cowritten by Hans Gunnarsson, Kathrina Valen Zeiner,Cathinka Nicolaysen, Nikolaj Frobenius and Skjoldbjaerg, “Pioneer” opened the Norwegian International Film Festival on August 15. Magnolia Pictures snapped up US rights. No release date has been announced.
