Watch: The People's Princess Partakes in Adultery and Intrigue in Domestic Trailer for 'Diana'

Ahead of its stateside release on the first of November, a full domestic trailer for “Diana” has just been unveiled. Having been met with a roundly negative reception after debuting in the UK over the weekend, the film’s lack of festival presence and short notice on a preview now seem to make a bit more sense. Between the current course of events on “Diana” and “Grace of Monaco” being pushed back to the spring of next year, Cate Blanchett is now better-positioned than ever to be the frontrunner in the Best Actress race.
The trailer starts out by seemingly doing a check list of the most iconic aspects of Diana’s public life, with emphasis put on her red carpet glamor as well as her visit to an Angola hospital and advocacy to ban land-mines. Rather than continuing to go down the standard biopic route, though, “Diana” hones in on a very specific aspect of the princess’ life; namely her relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). In doing so, the film appears to go into something of a thriller mode as it portrays Diana’s attempts to keep the explosive and scandalous secret under wraps, at several points donning a brunette wig to evade attention, insisting “I’m a princess, and I get what I want.” As Dodi Fayed enters the picture and Diana seemingly gives into the paparazzi spotlight in some sort of act of liberation, with Khan telling her “I can’t seem to live without you.” All of this melodramatic buffoonery is played with the utmost seriousness.
“Diana” opens in limited release on November 1. Thoughts on the trailer?
