AFI FEST Adds Centerpiece Galas and Special Screenings, World Premiere of Peter Berg's 'Lone Survivor'

The American Film Institute (AFI) is adding more Centerpiece Galas. They include several films with advance Oscar buzz looking to build momentum at the height of awards season: John Wells and Tracy Letts’ Toronto title “August: Osage County” on November 8 and the world premiere of Peter Berg’s war film “Lone Survivor” (November 12). 

The fest is also screening Bernardo Bertolucci’s Oscar-winning “The Last Emperor” in 3-D on November 10. All Galas will be presented in the TCL Chinese Theatre.

AFI FEST’s Special Screenings are fest circuit veterans: Spike Jonze’s NYFF closer “Her,” “The Invisible Woman. directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes, Cannes doc “Jodorowsky’s Dune,” TIFF biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” starring Idris Elba, Afghar Farhadi’s “The Past,” starring Cannes-winner Berenice Bejo, Stephen Frears’ fest hit “Philomena,” starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, and Errol Morris doc “The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld.” 

As previously announced, Agnès Varda will serve as Guest Artistic Director. The North American Premiere of “Saving Mr. Banks” is the Opening Night Gala on Thursday, November 7 and the Coen brothers’ Cannes entry “Inside Llewyn Davis” is the Closing Night Gala on Thursday, November 14. Centerpiece Galas include the World Premiere of Scott Cooper’s “Out of the Furnace” on Saturday, November 9, and Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska” with a Tribute to Cannes-winner Bruce Dern on Monday, November 11, and NYFF closer, Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” on Wednesday, November 13.
