Alamo Drafthouse Gets Girlie with 'Forever Fest' Devoted to Girlie Pop Culture

Can’t get enough “Dirty Dancing?” Find yourself constantly quoting “Clueless” and “Sixteen Candles?” Forever Fest, the first ever festival devoted to girlie pop culture, might be just the thing for you. Co-founded by Alamo Drafthouse programmer Sarah Pitre and publicist Brandy Fons, Forever Fest will kick off its inaugural year at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin, Texas on November 1. Pitre and Fons have launched a Kickstarter campaign to support the event.

“Girlie pop culture is anything you would gush about at a slumber party with your friends, everything you grew up watching that you’re nostalgic for,” Pitre told Indiewire. “It’s also something that makes you happy and giddy totally want to geek out. At Forever Fest, we’re mostly focused on films that we’ve seen a thousand times that never get old.”

Forever Fest is loosely an extension of Alamo’s “Girlie Night” series, which Pitre programs and which celebrates slumber party classics. “The idea was that there wasn’t a festival that was celebrating what Girlie Night did for girlie pop culture,” said Fons, who said that “Girlie Night has a very dedicated audience.”

Alamo Drafthouse founder and CEO Tim League “loved the idea and totally supported us, but we felt strongly about wanting to do this on our own,” said Fons. “If we need help, Alamo is there. They’re supporting us through branding, social media, blogs and on-screen support.” In other words, if the Kickstarter campaign fails, the fest is still on. It just “may not be as big or star studded as we’ve hoped,” the co-founders write on their Kickstarter page. They also point out that even though they’re part of the Alamo Drafthouse family, they still have to pay to rent the theater.

Forever Fest will be announcing ticketing soon and has already announced some of its planned programming, including a screening of “Empire Records” with star Ethan Embry in attendance and Danceoke, “your favorite cinematic dance routines performed live on stage while the scene plays on the big screen.” There will also be a book talk with Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks (creators of Go Fug Yourself and authors of Spoiled and Messy) and Megan McCafferty, creator of the Jessica Darling series.

The logo for “Forever Fest” was created by 12-year-old Tatum Mason, but, unfortunately, she’s not old enough to attend Forever Fest. “It’s for women and men of legal age. That’s why we’re drinking the entire time in our video,” said Fons. “You can’t tell, but we’re drinking Sofia Coppola champagne.”

Pitre also emphasized that Forever Fest isn’t just for women. “It doesn’t matter how old you are or what gender you are. The only thing that matters is that you’re as excited about the programming as we are.”

They’re already 1/3 of the way to reaching their goal of $15,000 and the campaign runs until October 25th. Check out the awesome rewards they’re giving to backers, including a script critique by Kirsten Smith (“Legally Blonde,” “10 Things I Hate About You”) for $400.
