LatinoBuzz: Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos

During this year’s Toronto International Film Festival a news on the latest south of the border film resort were announced, Mexico’s Baja International Film Festival (November 13-16, 2013) The young festival aims become one of the region’s premier industry events and will showcase films from Mexico, the U.S., Canada.

This Los Cabos-based event will open with Academy Award-winner Juan Jose Campanella’s animated film Foosball (Mete Gol) , and will also include special presentations of two Canadian films. Sarah Prefers to Run by Chloe Robichaud, and The Dirties by Matt Johnson, which recently opened in American screens.

With a focus on the North American film business BIFF will offer over $170,000 USD in awards and
funds to support North American producers and filmmakers, along with
their partners, the Mexican Tourism Board (CPTM), Los Cabos Tourism
Board (FITURCA), Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE-CONACULTA),
Moviecity and Labodigital. The festival will also become the first one in Mexico to count with a
Film Fund,
Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, named after the celebrated Mexican cinematographer.

This fund will offer help to projects in development, and via the company Labodigital it will also support other projects with post-production costs. Other awards include the Bengala Agency Award , which offers grants to projects in the script stage, and will be judged by a panel of prominent figures in Mexican cinema such as Gael Garcia Bernal and Gerardo Naranjo.

deserves a platform in which film professional neighbors can explore
real channels of collaboration,” says Festival Director Alonso
program brings together a selection of brave and vibrant
independent film voices from Canada, Mexico and the US, combined with
industry activities focused on providing useful tools for producers and
filmmakers. Los Cabos, the most exclusive paradise
at the edge of Mexico, extends its red carpet on the beach for a runway
of true film lovers.”

Hosting the first industry focused events in the the country, the festival will also include Work In Progress Mexico,
an initiative which supports six upcoming Mexican films in post
production – allowing distributors, sales agencies, festival delegates
and international
buyers to view first-hand for potential sale.
