Morgan Spurlock is as much a media personality as he is a prolific filmmaker, a case CNN has handily made today by renewing “Inside Man,” the original series Spurlock produces and hosts for the cable news network.
The documentarian will head up a second season of eight hourlong episodes, to launch in Spring 2014 and tackle topics like “Celebrity” (the job of satisfying the public’s constant appetite for the famous), “Income Disparity” (the 1% vs. the 99%), and “The Future” (in which Spurlock goes on an epic quest to live forever).
The series, which premiered in June and airs on Sundays, is part of CNN’s move away from strictly hard news content, one that includes bringing on Anthony Bourdain for another weekend series, “Parts Unknown,” and adding a doc strand that most recently included an airing of “Blackfish.” According to CNN president Jeff Zucker, “‘Inside Man’ is the perfect example of the type of program our audience is looking for when we aren’t covering the news of the day. We are happy to be continuing our relationship with Morgan and his excellent production team at Warrior Poets.”
Spurlock’s still making movies — most recently 3D concert doc “One Direction: This Is Us” — but he started in and has had a lot of success with television, with FX series “30 Days” and Hulu’s “A Day in the Life.” He’s also executive producing Yahoo’s web series “Losing It with John Stamos.”
