Tom Clancy, bestselling author of many a thriller that would find an even wider audience with the help of Hollywood adaptations, has died at age 66. Check out clips below from his four books turned into films “The Hunt for Red October,” “Patriot Games,” “Clear and Present Danger” and “The Sum of All Fears.”
All four thrillers feature Clancy’s famous protagonist, CIA agent Jack Ryan, who would go on to be Commander-In-Chief in later stories. Alec Baldwin played Ryan in John McTiernan’s brilliant actioner “Hunt for Red October,” which was lensed by Jan Debont, the filmmaking team that went on to shoot “Die Hard.” The role was handed over to Harrison Ford for “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger” due to Baldwin’s renewal demands. He wound up doing a play on Broadway instead and lost a career-making franchise. Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002’s “Sum of All Fears.”
A final Jack Ryan book, “Command Authority,” will be published posthumously on December 3. And Paramount’s long-awaited Clancy series reboot, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Pine in the title role, with Branagh, Keira Knightley, and Kevin Costner, will be released December 25.
Clancy was an ardent military enthusiast, and co-authored a number of non-fiction books about U.S. actions abroad, such as “Into the Storm: On the Ground in Iraq” and “Every Man a Tiger: The Gulf War Air Campaign.” Many more of his novels and characters populate an endless number of military video games.
