Peter Berg Will Produce, Host New HBO Sports Doc Series 'State of Play'

Peter Berg, whose ability to move between the big and small screens is best summed up by his separate successes with “Friday Night Lights” in film and on TV, has a new sports documentary series at HBO.

Alongside Sarah Aubrey, Berg will executive produce “State of Play,” a doc series that will explore different themes from the world of sports and how they relate to larger society. Each episode will pair a 40-minute verite doc with a 20-minute roundtable discussion moderated by Berg. “I couldn’t be more excited to partner with HBO to give a voice to passionate, sports documentary filmmakers who have poured their own blood, sweat and tears into their work,” Berg said in the announcement.

The series will kick off with “Trophy Kids,” airing Wednesday, December 4th at 9pm, about parents who obsess over the athletic prowess and competitive success of their children. “Trophy Kids” is produced by Jake Wood, Chris Bell, Leland Anderson and Anthony Melillo.

“State of Play” isn’t Berg’s first nonfiction sports series at HBO — he also produced “On Freddie Roach,” about the famous foxing trailer, and boxing interview and news program “The Fight Game with Jim Lampley” for the premium network. On the scripted side, Berg also directed the pilot for Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s apocalyptic “The Leftovers,” which recently received a series order from HBO.
